The top professional football league in Greece is called the Super League, it was founded in 2006, replacing Alpha Ethniki as the top tier of Greek club football. The first Panhellenic Championship took place in 1927 and since then only six clubs have been Greek champions. The league has been dominated by Olympiacos, Panathinaikos and AEK Athens, whilst Aris, Larissa and PAOK have won titles, Greek football turned professional in 1979. Each season three teams are relegated to Beta Ethniki with three promoted teams taking their place, with sixteen teams in total making up the league.
