The league has been dominated by Olympiacos, Panathinaikos and AEK Athens, whilst Aris, Larissa and PAOK have won titles, Greek football turned professional in 1979. Each season three teams are relegated to Beta Ethniki with three promoted teams taking their place, with sixteen teams in total making up the league.
