Ashley Young started his youth career at Watfordes Academy despite being initially turned away by the club. However, after improving himself as a footballer, Young was offered a professional deal and was handed his debut as a substitute in 2003 at the age of 18. Young made a promising impact in his first appearances against Millwall with a goal. In his first season around the starting line up, Young made five substitute appearances and scored three goals in the process. Young came to the forefront in the 2004/05 campaign as he stood out in a Watford team that struggled for survival. Although he failed to score, he made numerous assists and picked up the clubes Young Player of the Year award for that season. Under Adrian Boothroyd, Young became one of the most feared players in the Championship during 2005/06 with 41 appearances and 15 goals in a more forward role than before. Younges contribution that season helped Watford achieve promotion to the Premier League.
Young began Watfordes Premiership campaign well with three goals early on. However, rumours of a transfer began to surface and West Ham had a bid of £10 million accepted at one stage. Even so, Young rejected the bid after wishing to move to a team where relegation was not an issue. This offer came soon after as Aston Villa captured the midfielder for £8 million up front. He also scored on his debut despite the team losing 3-1 to Newcastle. His good performances saw him named Man of the Match several times and he fared well in the end of season awards. Younges reputation grew even further in the 2008/09 season as his fantastic form assist Aston Villaes Champions League push early on. This prompted manager Martin OeNeill to claim that his winger was `world class`. Young has also started the 2009/10 campaign well with a penalty against Liverpool signalling he is still a player to be reckoned with in the top flight.
Despite his stand out domestic form, Younges international career is yet to explode into life. The young midfielder received ten caps at U21 level between 2006/07 including an impressive tournament at the 2007 U21 European Championships. However, he has only managed six full England appearances to date. The latest appearance came during the 2009 friendly against Holland where he failed to impress from a starting role. He will hope to be included in the squad for the 2010 World Cup.
