Patrick Vieira is a central midfielder who is currently playing at Manchester City in the Premiership. Following a youth career with several different lower league French clubs, he made his professional debut with Cannes at the age of 17. He made 49 appearances for the club and captained the side at the age of 19. However, shortly after he was snapped up by Italian club AC Milan. Nevertheless, his one season with the team was spent mainly in the reserves and he only made two appearances for the first team.
Vieira's big break arrived in 1996 as new Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger purchased the player for only £3.5 million. He immediately settled and formed an impressive partnership with Emmanuel Petit. In the 1997/98 campaign, he won the Premier League and FA Cup double which ended Manchester United's solo dominance in English football. The midfielder established his reputation as one of the best midfielders in the world throughout the next couple of years and won a further double with the club in 2002. Following Tony Adams retirement in 2002, Vieira was named as the Arsenal captain. After missing out on the FA Cup final triumph in 2003 due to injury, the midfielder captained Arsenal to a historic unbeaten league season in 2003/04. With transfer speculation surrounding him, Vieira's form dipped in the 04/05 season as Arsenal lost their unbeaten record and eventually finished 2nd in the league after dropping points to relegation candidates.
Even so, it was still a shock when Vieira left Arsenal in 2005 for Italian club Juventus. With Vieira playing alongside Pavel Nedved and Emerson in midfield, the club sailed to the Serie A league title in his first season. Nevertheless, the club was sent into disarray with news that they had been demoted to Serie B and stripped of their titles for match fixing. This resulted in Vieira moving to Inter Milan who was one of the only large Italian clubs unaffected by the scandal. The midfielder's time at the club was disrupted due to injury although he managed to pick up winners medals for Serie A in 2007, 2008 and 2009 as Inter dominated the league. With his contract up at the end of the 2010 campaign, it looked as if Vieira would move to a lesser team, take up a career in the USA or retire. Nevertheless in January 2010, the player moved to Manchester City on a six month deal under former Inter manager Roberto Mancini. If Vieira performs well during his time at the club, he has the option to extend his deal by a further year.
