Mark Viduka started his career with Melbourne Knights in the Australian League in 1993. In his two seasons with the club, he was top goalscorer in the NSL and was twice awarded the NSL Player of the Year award. In the 1994/95 season, Melbourne Knights won the league allowing Viduka to leave the club on a high. 1995 saw the striker move to Dinamo Zagreb of Croatia. He spent three and a half seasons with the team scoring 40 goals in 81 matches. In his time at Zagreb, Viduka reached the third round of the UEFA Cup and made his Champions League debut. In 1998, Viduka signed for Celtic for £3.5 million. His two seasons at the club were extremely prolific with the forward notching 30 goals in 37 games leading him to the Scottish Player of the Year award for 1999/2000.
Leeds manager David O’Leary signed Viduka just before the 2000/01 season for £6 million. In his first season, Viduka scored 22 goals including all four goals in the memorable 4-3 win over Liverpool at Elland Road. He repeated his goal tally in 2002/03 before Leeds financial troubles forced them to sell the player. A sale to Middlesbrough was complete although Viduka’s time at the club was initially frustrating due to injuries. However, he was the spearhead in the club’s 2005/06 UEFA Cup run to the final. The striker continued to impress and notched 19 goals during 2006/07. Inevitably other clubs became interested in the player who sealed a move to Newcastle in June 2007. Unfortunately, his time at St James Park was plagued by injuries and Viduka only managed seven goals in 38 appearances before becoming a free agent in July 2009.
Viduka’s international career flourished at U20 and U23 level where he scored goals for fun. His career for the full national team has been rather mixed. He has captained the Australian side since 2005 where he thrived under the management of Guus Hiddink at the 2006 World Cup. Since the Asian Cup in 2007, Viduka has failed to appear for the national team citing injuries as the main reason. However, a lack of commitment has been mentioned and it is still unknown as to whether the striker will return to the national team in time for the 2010 World Cup after missing the entire qualification campaign.
