Vicenza Football

Vicenza Calcio is an Italian football club based in the northern city of Vicenza in the Veneto region. Currently the club plays in Serie B, which is the second-ranked league in Italian football, the same as the Championship in English football. The club was founded on the 9th March 1902. They reached the top division in Italy, Serie A, in 1942, and only just avoided relegation in their final match of the 1942 season. After encountering several financial troubles and being relegated to Serie B, Vicenza spent 20 years in Serie A football, between 1955 and 1975. This was a glorious period for the Italian club, managing to reach 6th position in 1964 and 1966.

Between 1982 and 1985, Roberto Baggio started his career at the club. He is considered one of the most technically gifted players in the world, having gone on to play for major clubs Fiorentina, Juventus, Milan and Inter. He appeared in 3 World Cup and managed to score in all of them, being the only Italian player to do so. A memorable moment that remains in the mind of football fans worldwide was Baggio.s penalty miss against Brazil in the 1994 World Cup, which rewarded Brazil the coveted trophy. Other well-known players to play for Vicenza at some point in their career are AC Milan.s Massimo Ambrosini, ex-Inter defender Francesco Coco, Lazio French midfielder Ousmane Dabo, ex-Everton player Alessandro Pistone, and Bayern Munich goal-machine Luca Toni.

The team is nicknamed the Biancorossi, meaning the white-reds, due to their traditional striped white and red home kits. Their away kit is currently black and their kits are manufactured by Diadora. Vicenza own their Romeo Menti stadium, which can hold 20920 supporters, but was reduced to 9990 due to Italian security measures. Angelo Gregucci, a 43-year-old ex-defender, coaches Vicenza Calcio, which currently sit just above relegation zone as the season draws to a close.
