Mamelodi Sundowns are a South African team that were founded in 1970. The club were affiliated to the Federation Professional Soccer League in 1973. In the same year, they reached the final of the Coca Cola Cup where they lost 5-3 to Berea United. However, they underwent problems in 1978 as the Federation Professional Soccer League disbanded meaning that Sundowns dropped into the second division of the National Professional Soccer League.
Several years of financial troubles occurred before the team earned promotion to the top division of the National Soccer League in 1985. The club then underwent a period of success gaining their first NSL title in 1988 before further successes in 1990 and 1993. In 1996, the Premier Soccer League was formed and replaced the NSL. Sundowns dominated the new division in the early years with three consecutive titles between 1997 and 2000 along with success in the 1998 BobSave Super Bowl and the 1999 Rothmans Cup.
In 2001, the club had some continental success as they reached the final of CAF Champions League where they were defeated 4-1 by Al-Ahly. The team went several years in the early noughties without making an impression in the league but they managed to win their first league title for six years in 05/06. The club then backed that up with a second successive title in 06/07. However, that was their last league success to date. A late run in the 09/10 campaign saw them finish second only one point behind first place. They will hope to notch their 6th Premier Soccer League title in 2010/11.
