Sunderland Football
Sunderland AFC were formed in 1879 at a meeting of schoolteachers called by James Allan, at first the club were called Sunderland and District Teachers´ Association Football Club. After the first year non-teachers were allowed to join and the name was changed to Sunderland AFC. Sunderland play their home games at The Stadium of Light in Sunderland, having moved to the modern stadium from their old ground Roker Park.
Sunderland play their home games wearing a red and white striped shirt, in 1882 they played in blue shirts, blue knickerbockers and a white stripe very different to today´s kit.
Sunderland have the nickname of the Black Cats this stems originally from a gun battery in 1805 on the River Wear which was renamed the ´Black Cat´ battery after the men manning the station heard a mysterious miaow from a wailing black cat, in 1905 the name was adopted by the football club.
