In its current form, Accrington Stanley is one of the youngest clubs in the Football League, having only formed in 1968. However, the current ASFC was predated by a former club of the same name, which was established as Stanley Villa back in 1891. Having folded in 1966, the club was revived in its current form, two years later.
Accrington Stanley have amassed multiple championships in the lower echelons of Britain's expansive non-league system. However, their real crowning glory came in 2006, when they were promoted to the Football League proper, for the first time in their history, as champions of the Conference National, now known as the Blue Square Premiership.
Accrington Stanley play in red shirts, usually with white shorts and black socks. their current away kit is all blue.
No profile of the self-titled 'most famous little club in the world' can go without a reference to the television advert that made the club iconic amongst UK fans. In a advert for milk, first broadcast in 1980, two Liverpudlian boys discuss the merits of drinking milk. The most famous (or should that be infamous?...) line of the advert sees one of the boys claim that if he doesn't drink his milk he'd only be good enough to play for Accrington Stanley. To which the other boy asks "Accrington Stanley, who are they?". Upon this question, the first boy replies, "Exactly." This phrase is now used, in endearing fashion, by the presenters of Soccer Am, whenever they cover an incident involving the club.
