Silva began his football career as a fleet-footed winger in the youth ranks of Spanish side Valencia CF. After several successful loan stints - notably at Celta Vigo - he made his senior debut for Valencia in 2006 at the age of 20. Wearing shirt number 21, he became an integral part of an attacking Valencia team, scoring 29 goals in 155 appearances during his four year tenure in Spain.
After a protracted pursuit by Manchester City, and with many other clubs also in the running for the Spanish international, Valencia allowed David to move to Roberto Mancini's side for a reported £25 million at the start of the 2010-2011 season. He kept his shirt number 21 for his new side as he made an instant impact in England, scoring 6 times and creating 15 goals in 53 appearances. This helped him become a fan-favourite at the City of Manchester Stadium as they went on to win the FA Cup and qualify for the UEFA Champions League for the first time for the 2011-2012 season.
2006 was also the year Silva made his debut for the Spanish national team, in a 1-0 friendly loss to Romania. Silva had played at U17 and U21 levels for Spain, and made the step up to the international side well. He has since won 54 international caps scoring 14 goals, and was part of the Spanish team that won UEFA Euro 2008 - scoring the eventual winner in the semi-final against Russia - and the FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa.
