Nicky Shorey began his youth career with Leyton Orient as an apprentice in 1998. He eventually broke into the first team with occasional appearances in the 1999/00 and 2000/01 seasons. He managed to catch the eye of manager Alan Pardew and he signed for Reading for £25,000 in 2001. From 2001 onwards, Shorey established himself as a first team regular at Reading and has been named in the clubes all time eleven since. In August 2006, he committed himself to the club with a new three year deal. The 2006/07 Premier League campaign saw Shorey help lead Reading to 8th place in the table. He also managed to finish 2nd in the 06/07 Fans Player of the Season award. The following season saw Reading relegated back to the Championship on the final day of the season and it proved to be Shoreyes last appearance for the club.
In August 2008, Shorey signed a three year deal with Aston Villa for an undisclosed fee. However, his career at Villa has failed to take off with many fans making him a scapegoat for several of their defeats in the 2008/09 campaign. He was dropped for a large proportion of the season with Luke Young deputising at left back with Wilfred Bouma out injured. Shorey began the 2009/10 season at left back but the purchase of Steven Warnock from Blackburn led to speculation that Shorey would be on his way out of Villa Park. It looked likely to be the case on transfer deadline day as Shorey was linked with Portsmouth but he ended up staying at the club.
The defenderes international career has taken a back seat in the last year as Shorey looks to establish himself as a club regular once again. He was called up the England B squad in May 2007 and started the 3-1 victory against Albania. He has made two appearances since for the full England in friendlys against Brazil and Germany in 2007.
