Shamrock Rover FC is an Irish football club based in the capital city Dublin. Currently, Shamrock play in the eircom League Premier which is the highest division in Irish football. Shamrock Rovers are regarded as one of the most successful clubs in this division and in all Ireland, having won the Premier League 16 times and triumphed 24 times in the cup. Nicknamed the Hoops and the Rovers, due to the green hooped home shirts that they wear, Shamrock have grown significantly as a club in the long history that stretches back to 1901. The team got its name from Shamrock Avenue in the founding south suburb of Dublin, Ringsend, where the first club rooms were secured. Shamrock started to make use of hooped home shirts in September 1926.
This year.s season was the first one where the hoops on the home jerseys are not continuous on the back, due to a new FIFA rule which states that the number and name on the back of the shirt must be shown on a plain-coloured background. The club has been without a fixed club-owned stadium since 1987, when a former director sold Glenmalure Park. From 2009, Shamrock plan to play in the newly-built Tallaght Stadium, which cost an estimated 9 million euros to construct, and is still in the construction process. It should be ready before the 2009 eircom League Premier kicks off and will have a capacity of 10000 fans.
