The Scottish Premier League is a professional league competition for football clubs located in the top level of the Scottish football league system. The SPL is currently ranked 10th in the UEFA rankings of European leagues. Since its start in 1998-9, the SPL has been the league where 17 clubs have competed in, yet only Celtic and Rangers have managed to become champions. The latest Champions are Celtic who won it in the 2006-2007 season winning their fifth title. Currently Rangers are on course to win the Scottish League, having a match in hand and 7 points advantage over rivals Celtic.
A total of 12 teams compete in the SPL and the 2007/08 season’s participating teams were: Rangers, Celtic, Motherwell, Dundee Utd, Hibernian, Abderdeen, Falkirk, Hearts, Inverness CT, Kilmarnock, St Mirren and Gretna. Henrik Larsson is the SPL all-time top goalscorer with a tally of 158 goals, when he used to play for Celtic.
