Santos is a Brazilian left-back that can also play a more advanced attacking role down the flank. He began his career in his native Brazil for local side Figueirense, making his debut in the 2004 season, aged 20. After making several loan stints during the next few years - particularly at Flamengo where he scored 18 goals over two seasons - he transferred to Corinthians in 2008. He helped the club in two successful seasons in Sao Paulo, earning promotion back to the top flight and winning the Brazilian Cup in 2009.
A move to Europe was evidently on the cards for the Brazilian, and in July 2009 he made the move to Fenerbahce in Istanbul, Turkey. Wearing the number 27, Santos displaced Brazilian legend Roberto Carlos at left-back and became known as a goal-scoring defender. The club won the Turkish League in 2010-2011, but in the wake of a match-fixing scandal, Santos left for Arsenal in England in 2011.
Joining the Londoners for €7 million and taking up the number 11, Santos has had a mixed first season in England thus far. His most notable appearance was in the 5-3 victory at cross-town rivals Chelsea, scoring a pivotal goal. But injuries have prevented him appearing more frequently. In international football, Santos got his first taste of playing for Brazil when they won the Confederations Cup in 2009. He was the starting left-back for Brazil at the 2010 World Cup, and remains a regular in the side. He has made 22 appearances for the Samba Boys currently.
