Vitor Borba Ferreira, better known as Rivaldo, is a 35-year old attacking midfielder regarded as one of the best players to emerge from Brazil. He had a very long career, playing for huge clubs as well as less known teams. Rivaldo.s first professional contract was signed at Brazilian club Paulista. He spent until 1996 playing in his home country, before moving on to Europe from Palmeiras.
Rivaldo joined Deportivo La Coruna but only spent the 1996-97 season playing at the club, scoring an astonishing 21 goals in 41 matches. He was signed by Spanish mega-club Barcelona in 1997 for around $26 million. He scored 86 goals in 159 appearances in the glorious 5 seasons he spent at the Nou Camp. In 2002, he moved to Serie A club Milan, scoring 5 goals in 22 appearances, and spending just one season at the club before moving on.
Rivaldo decided to spend his final years playing in his home country Brazil. He signed for Cruzeiro, but only spent a single season there, before returning to Europe again. His destination this time was Greece. He played for Olympiakos between 2004 and 2007 and scored 36 goals in 70 appearances.
In the summer of 2007, Rivaldo decided to join rival club AEK Athens, after he failed to agree on a new contract at Olympiakos, which offered him an unreasonable wage reduction. He is still playing regularly for the Athenian club. Rivaldo is known for his play-making abilities, bicycle kicks and his technique.
For the Brazilian senior team, Rivaldo has appeared 74 times in the 10-year period he spent playing for Brazil. He made his senior debut in the year 1993. For Brazil he won the Confederations Cup in 1997, the Copa America in 1999 and the 2002 World Cup (Korea/Japan). He was also part of the squad that ranked as runners-up in the 1998 World Cup (France). Besides these team medals, he won a large number of personal awards. He retired from international football in 2003.
