Pepe Reina Spain kit
One of the greatest goalkeepers on the face of the planet Jose Mauel Reina, more commonly known as Pepe Reina, is a Spanish goalkeeper who plays for Liverpool in the English Premier League. Born on the 30th of August 1982 it is fair to say that shot stopping was Reina's blood from the start with his father a former Barcelona and Atletico Madrid goalkeeper. Growing up in Madrid, Reina received great coaching whilst being involved with the youth academy at Barcelona. In 2000 aged just 18, Reina was called up to the senior squad after injuries to the first and second choice goalkeepers.
Pepe appeared 30 times for the Catalans but after a change of management he could not secure further game time. Loaned to Villarreal in 2002 he made 109 appearances before Rafael Benitez signed who he regarded as “the best goalkeeper in Spain” to Liverpool in July 2005. Reina immediately claimed the number one goalkeeping spot on arrival, displacing Jerzy Dudek. This was no small feat considering Dudek was instrumental in Liverpool's UEFA Champions league success the year before, stopping 2 penalties in the final.
Reina is currently enjoying a successful spell at Liverpool and has already received three Barclay Golden glove awards between the 2005/06 & 2007/08 seasons. He was named player of the season for Liverpool's 2009/10 campaign. His achievements are not limited to club football however. He has contributed to Spain's success in winning the U-16 UEFA Championships in 1999, Euro 2008, and although he did not play in any matches he was a member of the 2010 FIFA World Cup winning squad.
