Real Betis Football

Founded in Seville in 1907 Real Betis Balompie play in the Spanish La Liga. For home fixtures the club play at the 52,700 capacity all seater Estadio Manuel Ruiz de Lopera.

The Real Betis team name comes from Baetica the Roman name for Andalusia and the Real comes from the team's supporter the King of Spain Don Alfonso XIII in 1914. Balompie literally translated to mean football in Spanish, futbol is an anglicised version. The foundation date of Real Betis is disputed, in 1907 students from the Escuela Politecnica started Sevilla Balompie which merged with Betis FC in 1914.

The club's colours come from a trip to Scotland by one of the club's founding members, Manuel Ramos Asensio, who in 1912 received a set of green & black shirts from Glasgow Celtic and suggested the club adopt the kit. After an extended losing run the club decided the colours were unlucky and replaced them with a green and white version.
