Reading Football
Reading FC formed in 1871, initially known as the biscuitmen, they became known as the Royals in the 1970s. Reading started off playing at the Reading Recreation Ground until 1878, then moved on to Reading Cricket Ground until 1882, Coley Park til 1889 and Caversham Cricket Ground until 1896. The era of professionalism in 1895 meant a bigger stadium was required and purpose built Elm Park opened on September 5th 1896. By 1998 Elm Park had seen better days and with expansion and moderization in mind, the club moved into the new 24,225 capacity Madejski Stadium, named after inspirational chairman John Madejski.
Reading have never won the FA Cup or League Cup, but did claim the Full Members CUp in 1988. It wasn't until 25th March 2006 when claiming a draw away to Leicester that guaranteed promotion to the Premiership, Reading ensured their first season of top flight English football, a week later they won to win the 2005/06 Coca-Cola Championship title.
Famous players to have pulled on the blue and white hooped shirts of Reading include: Martin Hicks with 500 league appearances for Reading, Jimmy Quinn, Ronnie Blackman - Reading's top all time goalscorer, Matt Busby, Ronnie Blackman, Kerry Dixon, Shaka Hislop, Neil Webb, Michael Gilkes and Tony Daley. In 2001 Reading registered the shirt number 13 to the fans in recognition of their impact on the teams performances on the pitch. Since then no player has worn the number on the back of their kit.
