Boateng was born in Berlin, Germany to a Ghanaian father and a German mother on the 6th of March, 1987. He began his footballing career with Reinickendorfer Fuchse and he joined Hertha Berlin in July 2004 aged seven years old. He stayed at the club until 2007 where he moved to Tottenham Hotspur. He made 29 appearances for the second team scoring five goals and he made 42 appearances for the senior side scoring four goals. In July 2007 he signed a £5.4 million deal for the Spurs. He made 14 appearances for the club. In 2009 he was loaned to Borussia Dortmund where he made ten appearances. In 2009 he signed a three year deal for Portsmouth worth £4 million. He helped the club to reach the 2010 FA Cup final where they lost 1-0 to Chelsea. He played 22 matches scoring three goals for Pompey.
In 2010 he signed a co-ownership deal with Genoa and AC Milan. He made his debut for Milan on the 29th of August 2010 in a 4-0 win over Lecce. He scored his first goal for the club in a 3-0 win over Brescia. He scored a superb hat-trick against Lecce winning the match 4-3 when they were 3-0 down.
Boateng played for Germany U-15, U-16, U-19 and U-21 teams as he made his way up the ranks in Germany. However he made his international debut for Ghana on his fathers side. At the age of 24 he announced his retirement from international football.
