Primeira Liga is the top tier league of Portuguese club football. The league was founded in 1934 and was known as the Primeira Divisao. The league contains sixteen professional teams. The league is currently known as the Liga Zon Sagres for sponsorship reasons. Clubs who come 15th and 16th in the league are relegated to the Segunda Liga. Benfica have won the most championships at 32. The current champions of the league is FC Porto (2011-2012) and this made it their 26th Primeira Liga title. The league is dominated by four clubs FC Porto, SL Benfica, SC Braga and Sporting Lisbon.

The domestic cups are the Taca de Portugal and Taca da Liga which is the equivalent to England's FA Cup and League Cup and the Supertaca which is the equivalent to England's FA Community Shield. The international cups are the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League. FC Porto famously won the 2003-2004 UEFA Champions League under now Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho.

Benfica, FC Porto and Sporting Lisbon have the highest attendance numbers in the league. Fernando Peyroteo is the leading goal scorer of the league with 331 goals. Benfica have won the Primeira Liga twice unbeaten one in the 1972-73 season and one in the 1977-78 season. FC Porto also played the 2010-11 season unbeaten.
