Portsmouth Football
Portsmouth Football Club were formed in 1898 and they are one of the clubs that became a limited company and professional club right from the outset. Portsmouth play their home games at Fratton Park, Frogmore Road in Portsmouth. The ground at Fratton Park was purchased by the founders of the club and despite improvements, is showing signs of age. Therefore at the end of the 2003/04 season, plans to develop a new stadium were drawn up and approved.
Portsmouth who are nicknamed Pompey after the city, play their home games wearing shirts in dark blue. Jimmy Dickinson with 764 holds the record for the most league appearances in the shirt between 1946-1965.
Pompey have throughout their history had a strong rivalry with near neighbours Southampton, even when they have not been in the same league. Portsmouth also have a reputation for developing players and not spending vast sums in the market to ensure their survival.
