Philadelphia Union Football
Philadelphia Union are an American football club who were founded in 2008 and allowed to participate in the MLS from 2010. In 2007, the Sons of Ben supporter group began protesting for a Philadelphia expansion team to take part in Major League Soccer. After much deliberation, the league decided to incorporate the state as their 16th team of the league.
In May 2009, the team was named as Philadelphia Union following a fan poll in January months before. The Union play their games at the 18,500 capacity PPL Park and are also nicknamed the ‘Zolos’. Former DC United manager Piotr Nowak is the club's manager and brings with him the experience of winning the MLS Cup.
The team played their debut competitive match on March 25th 2010 away to Seattle Sounders. However, their first match ended in disappointment with a 2-0 defeat and a red card for Union defender Toni Stahl. They will be competing against New York Red Bulls, Kansas City Wizards, Columbus Crew, New England Revolution, Chicago Fire, Toronto FC and DC United in the Eastern Conference for the majority of the season.
