Parma Football
Parma were formed in 1913 as Verdi Football Club, named after Giuseppe Verdi the famous opera composer who was born in the city, but by December of 1913 the club had changed its name to Parma FC. Parma first played Italian league football in 1919 and went on to be founding members of Serie B in 1929.
Parma wear shirts of white with a black cross on them, these are the club's original colours, but some recent football fans wouldn't recognise these as Parma's home kit colours. From 1998 to 2004 the club had some of their most succesful seasons winning the UEFA Cup in 1999, spectators got used to seeing them wear yellow and navy blue hooped home shirts in that time. These colours became recognisible with Parma, but they have since switched back to the old home colours. The yellow and blue do still make up the away shirt.
Famous players over the years to wear Parma's shirt incluce Swedish striker Tomas Brolin, Romania's Adrian Mutu, Luca Bucci, Lilian Thuram and goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon. The club have twice won the UEFA Cup and the European Cup Winners' Cup once, the closest they came to winning Italy's Serie A was in 1997 when they missed out to Juventus by a single point, finishing runners up.
