Nemanja Vidic Serbia kit
Nemanja Vidic is a centre back who is currently playing at Manchester United in the Premier League. The defender began his career as a youth player in Serbia with several smaller sides before being scouted by Red Star Belgrade. However, his professional career began with Spartak Subotica in 2000 after joining on a season long loan. He made 27 appearances at the club and scored an impressive six goals from the heart of the defence. Upon his return he became a regular at Red Star Belgrade where he won the Yugoslav Cup in 2001/02. Vidic became Red Star captain at the beginning of the 2002/03 campaign and managed to score 12 goals in 67 matches during the remainder of his tenure. He managed to sign off on a high in 2004 with a league and cup double at the Serbian team.
In July 2004, Vidic moved to Russian club Spartak Moscow for an undisclosed fee. In his eighteen months at the club, the defender made 39 appearances and managed to score four times. Even so, it was still a surprise when Manchester United signed the little known defender in January 2006 for £7 million. Nevertheless, the player spent the remainder of the 05/06 season settling into English football. The beginning of the 06/07 campaign saw Vidic paired with Rio Ferdinand in what has become one of the most solid defensive partnerships in the world. The centre back ended his first full season in England with a Premier League medal. The 2007/08 campaign proved even better for Vidic as he won another league title alongside a Champions League winning medal. The end of the 2008/09 season saw Vidic claim the Manchester United fans player and player 's player of the year. He was also nominated for the PFA Player of the Year award but lost out to Ryan Giggs. He will hope to win a 4th successive Premier League medal during the current season.
The defender has also received various plaudits at international level with Serbia. Originally, Vidic made his debut playing for Serbia and Montenegro against Italy in 2002. He was part of the defence that conceded just one goal throughout the entirety of the 2006 World Cup qualification campaign. However, the centre back did not feature at the tournament due to a suspension and injury problems. With the nation now known as solely Serbia, Vidic has continued to impress and will hope to lead the country to a good performance at the 2010 World Cup after an impressive qualifying campaign.
