North Korea DPR Football

The North Korean national football team, recognised by FIFA as Korea DPR, was founded in 1945 and has been an AFC member since 1954 and a FIFA member since 1958. They are controlled by the governing body of football in North Korea, the DPR Korea Football Association. It was 10 years after their affiliation with the AFC before they played their first international, a 0-0 draw with Burma in the Burmese capital of Yangon, on March 22nd, 1964.

2 years later they qualified for their first ever major tournament, the 1966 World Cup in England. They finished second in Group 4 behind the USSR, having beaten Italy 1-0 in arguably the biggest result in their history. They met Portugal in the quarterfinals in what proved to be a World Cup classic. North Korea opened the scoring in the first minute through Pak Seung-Zin and found themselves 3-0 up in only the 25th minute. However the brilliance of Eusébio was too much for the North Koreans to handle, scoring 4 goals in a Portuguese fightback that ended 5-3. This was the furthest an Asian team had ever progressed in the World Cup Finals, and since then North Korea have not qualified for another World Cup tournament. They have also qualified for two Asian Cups, placing fourth in 1980 and being knocked out in the group stage in 1992.

Other historically significant matches include their biggest win, a match against Guam which finished 21-0, and their equal biggest defeats, going down by five goals to Bulgaria and Poland, 6-1 and 5-0 respectively.

They play their home matches at the Kim Il-Sung Stadium, a 70,000 capacity ground located in the capital of Pyongyang. The team is composed of both North Korean-born players and Zainichi Koreans, longterm residents of Japan of Korean heritage. It is often only Zainichi who follow their team when they play abroad, as ordinary North Koreans are rarely allowed to leave the country.

The political situation on the Korean peninsula has lead to some controversial events surrounding the two teams. This includes the recent 2010 World Cup Qualifier in which the North Korean government banned the playing of the South Korean national anthem and South Korean flags from the match. The situation was eventually resolved when FIFA stepped in and moved the game to a neutral venue in Shanghai, China.
