Samir Nasri started his youth career at Olympique Marseille when he was nine years old. His debut in Ligue 1 came in the 2004/05 season at the age of 17 where he made thirteen starts and 11 substitute appearances contributing one goal in the process. The following season saw Nasri gain European experience in the UEFA Cup before the 2006/07 campaign eventually saw him score his first league goal in April 2007 against FC Sochaux. Just a month later, Nasri was named French Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year ahead of Karim Benzema. He was awarded the Marseille Player of the Year award receiving 62% of the vote from his own supporters along with being branded the new Zidane.
The young midfielder spent one more season at Marseille before Arsenal signed him in the summer of 2008 for £12.7 million. He made the best possible start to his Arsenal career with a goal four minutes into his league debut against West Bromwich Albion. In the second leg of the Champions League qualifier against FC Twente, Nasri notched again just 26 minutes in his club European debut. This was followed by two goals for the midfielder in the 2-1 victory over Manchester United in November 2008 becoming one of the Gunners most consistent performers. His versatility has seen him deployed all over the midfield and despite a disappointing first season in terms of silverware, Nasri will be a key figure for Arsenal’s push for titles in the 2009/10 campaign.
Nasri has been involved in the French international set up for a long time progressing through the U16’s, U17’s, U18’s, U19’s and U21’s. He was also part of the team that won the 2004 UEFA U17 Championships, hitting the winning goal in the final. Nasri made his full international debut in March 2007 against Austria and managed to contribute an assist. The highlight of his international career to date is being named in the squad for the 2008 European Championships. In the tournament, Nasri made two short substitute appearances but had little time to make an impression.
