Mikael Silvestre is a centre back/full back who currently plays for Arsenal in the Premier League. The French defender began his career in his homeland with the Rennes academy. In the 1995/96 season he made his debut with the club and went on to make 49 appearances over two seasons. With his reputation built, Silvestre moved to Inter at the beginning of the 1998/99 campaign. He made 18 league appearances along with six showings in the European Cup. However, he never really established himself at the Italian club.
After only one season with Inter, Manchester United signed the defender for £3.5 million. His first season with the team was not overly impressive as he struggled to adapt to the English league. Nevertheless, he eventually made his mark in the first team and by 2001/02, Silvestre was the first choice left back ahead of veteran Dennis Irwin. He continued to impress during the following campaign and looked even more assured when switched to his favoured centre back position following an injury to Rio Ferdinand. However, the 2003/04 season saw the first signs of uncertainty creep into Silvestre's game. With Rio Ferdinand given an eight month ban for missing a drugs test, Silvestre partnered Wes Brown at the heart of the defence although both were responsible for United conceding sloppy goals. This problem continued into the 2004/05 season which eventually saw Silvestre lose his place as a guaranteed starter. With the purchases of Patrice Evra and Nemanja Vidic in 2006, Silvestre found it even harder to break into the team. A broken metatarsal and dislocated shoulder at different points of the season saw his appearances largely restricted. Silvestre had opportunities to join Lyon and Newcastle United but rejected them to fight for his place at United. However, a bad knee injury saw him ruled out for the majority of the 2007/08 campaign. Upon his return he played a couple of matches but his time at Old Trafford looked all but over.
Despite only being a year away from a testimonial, the defender signed for Arsenal in August 2008 for an undisclosed fee. Originally, Silvestre was given several chances to impress but was criticised on occasions for several poor performances. During his time with Arsenal, Silvestre has struggled to break into the team and has seen several of Arsenal's up and coming youth players overtake him in the pecking order. The defender's international career has also stagnated in recent years. His debut came in 2001 in a 1-0 friendly victory over Germany. This led to him becoming a regular member in the French squad and he made appearances at the 2001 and 2003 Confederations Cup. Nevertheless, he was criticised for some disappointing performances at Euro 2004. The defender has made 40 France caps to date.
