Fernando Morientes is a striker who is currently playing with Olympique de Marseille in the French league. The Spaniard began his career in his homeland with Albacete in 1993. During his two years at the club, he scored five goals in 22 appearances with the majority as substitute. In 1995, he moved to Real Zaragoza where he spent a further two seasons enhancing his reputation as an up and coming striker. His performances at Zaragoza were impressive and he notched 28 goals in 66 appearances.
During the summer of 1997, Real Madrid bought the player for 6.6 million Euros. Initially a back up striker, Morientes forced his way into the first team and finished the season as the club's highest scorer with 12 goals. He also won the Champions League during that season. The 1998/99 and 1999/00 campaigns saw the striker finish with 19 goals. He also helped Madrid to their second Champions League triumph in three seasons. The 2000/01 season saw Morientes miss the latter part of the campaign through injury although he won his first La Liga crown with the club. 2001/02 saw Madrid lose out on the league although Morientes scored a fantastic 18 goals in 25 starts. However, he celebrated the season by winning his third Champions League medal. Nevertheless, his Madrid career was to go downhill from this point as the signing of Ronaldo saw him slip down the pecking order. At the start of 2003/04, Morientes went on loan to AS Monaco where he scored 10 goals in 28 league appearances. It was in the Champions League that Morientes made an impact with nine goals as Monaco went on a stunning run to the final. On his way, he knocked out Chelsea in the semi finals but could not inspire the side to victory over FC Porto.
Morientes returned to Madrid in 2004/05 but could not force his way into the side. In 2005/06, he was transferred to Liverpool. However, his time at the Merseyside club was relatively unsuccessful. In his two season's, he only managed eight goals in 41 appearances. Although he won the FA Cup during his time at the club, it came as little surprise when he was sold to Valencia after one year in the summer of 2006. Morientes started to find something close to his old form and notched 12 goals in 24 games during his first year. However, his increasing age combined with various injuries saw his goals and appearances arrive less frequently. In July 2009, the striker moved to Marseille on a free for a year. The striker currently has one goal to his name in just ten appearances at the club.
