The USA's main football league competition is called Major League Soccer. Formed in 1993, the first season started in 1996, season's run from April to November when there are the playoffs and the championship match is played. MLS team's play in two conferences with the four top teams from each qualifying for the playofffs.
There have been many predessors to the MLS, notably the NASL (North American Soccer League) which featured greats of the game from 1968 to 1984 including Franz Beckenbauer and Pelé.
