Vincent Kompany Belgium kit
Kompany began his football career in Belgium with Anderlecht aged 17, in 2003. Wearing the unusual shirt number 87, the centre-half and defensive midfielder gained admirers from all over Europe and the world with his strong performances in the Belgian League – winning the First Division twice and the Belgian Supercup in 2006.
After three seasons in Belgium, Anderlecht were finally persuaded to let him leave to Hamburg, in Germany, for €10 million in 2006. Kompany spent two years in the Bundesliga – winning the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2007 – however he was hampered by an achilles injury that restricted his appearances.
2008 saw Kompany move to England when Mark Hughes made Vincent his third signing of the new Manchester City era. Playing in the number 33 shirt, he spent most of his first season at City as a holding midfielder but also as a centre half. Since his move he has been a permanent resident in City's defensive patterns, while also chipping in with the occasional goal. At the start of the 2011-2012 season, Kompany took over the number 4 shirt and became the permanent captain of the club.
Kompany has been an ever presence for the Belgian national team since his debut in 2004 as a teenager against France, and was made the Belgian captain in 2011. He has made 45 appearances in total, scoring twice. In 2008 Kompany was part of the Belgian Olympic team that competed in Beijing – however he only played the first game due to a red card against Brazil.
