Kolarov began his football career in his native Serbia, playing for several clubs in his homeland in his first few seasons. Originally at Red Star Belgrade, Kolarov moved to FC ČukariĊki in 2004 aged 18. The 2004-2005 season saw the left-back get exposure in the first team for the first time, however CukariCki got relegated and moved into the second tier in Serbia. Halfway through the next season, Kolarov controversially moved to OFK Belgrade on a free transfer – where he would score his first senior goal.

Kolarov spent one full season at OFK before a €925,000 move to Lazio in 2007, wearing the number 11. He spent three seasons at the Stadio Olimpico, impressing with his attacking instincts from defence, and becoming renowned for spectacular long range goals. He played 90 times for Lazio, scoring 7 goals, and leaving with a heightened reputation.

Manchester City came calling for Kolarov in 2010, signing him for £16 million and assigning him the number 13 shirt. His maiden season at City saw him as the usual starting left-back for the club in the league and cup, scoring three goals as City won the FA Cup for the first time since 1969.

Kolarov's international career has seen him play for Serbia U21s, and he went on to make his debut for the national side in 2008, a 2-1 friendly loss against Russia.
