Khedira began his football career with TV Oeffingen in Germany, before moving to into the VfB Stuttgart Academy aged 8. He rose through the ranks in Stuttgart’s youth system, making his debut for the senior side in 2006 against Hertha Berlin. The young German U17 player tasted his first major success in his maiden season with fellow future Germany players Mario Gomez, Andreas Beck and Serder Tasci, as Stuttgart won the Bundesliga in 2006-2007.
Khedira spent four seasons at the Mercedes-Benz Arena, where he scored 16 goals in 126 appearances. The defensive midfielder was an important member in the Stuttgart unit that made four top-six finishes in the league, and played in the Champions League twice. Khedira became a regular at representative level during this time, playing for the Germany U21s 15 times (with 5 goals), before making his international debut for the national side in 2009 against South Africa.
Khedira’s breakout moment was when he was called into the Germany team for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Khedira replaced then German captain Michael Ballack in midfield, and impressed in all of Germany’s seven games – scoring his first international goal in the bronze medal match. This brought Sami to international attention, and making Khedira a wanted talent in Europe.
Several weeks after the World Cup ended, Khedira was purchased by Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid and handed the number 24 shirt (later swapping to number 6). The highlight of his first season in Spain was winning the Copa del Rey; however Madrid were unable to beat out Barcelona for the La Liga title.
