Nwankwo Kanu is a Nigerian international footballer who plays for English Premier League club Portsmouth. He is 1.96 meters tall and is 31 years old, born on the 1st of August 1976. His shirt number is 27. He plays as a striker and scored the most goals for Portsmouth in the 2006/2007 season. The 2007/2008 season has not been as successful for Kanu but he has guided Portsmouth into the FA Cup Final with the only goal in the semi final.
Kanu was signed at Ajax in 1993 after playing notably well at the Under 17 World Championships. He made his Ajax debut in 1994 and played 54 games scoring 25 goals. In 1996 Ajax sold Kanu to Internazionale, he scored 1 goal in 11 appearances. In the same year he captained Nigeria at the Olympics in which they won the gold medal Kanu playing a pivotal role. Inter then found that Kanu had a defect in his heart, he was sidelined for 3 years then sold to Arsenal in 1999. At Arsenal Kanu scored 17 goals in 50 games before Theirry Henry burst onto the scene which resulted in Kanu became a regular on the bench. He played 119 games (half as a substitute) and scored 30 league goals. Kanu left Arsenal in 2004 and went to West Bromwich for the 2005/06 season he played 58 games and scored 9 goals. Kanu left West Bromwich after this season as his contract had ended and West Bromwich had been relegated. He was signed by Portsmouth for the next season (2006/2007) on a one year deal and has stayed with the club for the 2007/2008 season.
Kanu has established himself as one of the best African footballers ever. He has won the UEFA Champions League(Ajax), UEFA Cup(Inter), two African player of the year awards, the English Premier League and FA cup twice(Arsenal), 3 Dutch Eredivise titles(Ajax) and a gold medal(Nigeria). He has played for Nigeria since 1994 and is currently the captain.
