Branislav Ivanovic started his career at a low level with FK Srem in 2002 before transferring to OFK Beograd in December 2003. He spent three years in the top division of Serbia before he was signed by Lokomotiv Moscow in 2006. His time at Moscow was successful with 28 league appearances in his first season notching twice in the process. The following season saw Ivanovic established as a first team player with 26 further league appearances and three goals. He claimed his first silverware with the team in the summer of 2007 with the Russian Cup before making a move to England in the winter.
In the January 2008 transfer window, Chelsea confirmed that they had signed Ivanovic for £9 million. However, he failed to make an appearance during the rest of the Premier League season due to a lack of fitness. However, the 2008/09 season saw the defender more involved despite constantly being linked with several other European clubs. His finest moment was scoring two goals in the Champions League quarter final against Liverpool which saw Chelsea progress through to the semi finals. The defender will hope to become a Chelsea regular throughout 2009/10.
Ivanovic’s international career took off in the summer of 2007 as the Serbian U21’s finished runners up to the Netherlands. As a result, Ivanovic was named in the team of the tournament which saw him become more of a regular in the full national team. In September 2007, he scored a crucial goal against Portugal to secure a 1-1 draw in the Euro 2008 qualifying campaign. Ivanovic is currently the first choice centre back for his country alongside Nemanja Vidic as Serbia look to automatically qualify for the 2010 World Cup.
