The top Italian League, Serie A reached its current form in 1929, from its inception in 1898 it had been organised into regional groups.
Italy's Serie A is made up of twenty teams, at the end of the season the top two qualify directly for the Champions League, 3rd & 4th enter the Champions League Qualifiers, whilst 5th & 6th go into the UEFA Cup. The bottom three teams are relegated and replaced by three teams from Serie B.
Winning the Serie A is often referred to as the Scudetto as the winners wear a small coat of arms with the Italian tricolour on their kit for the next season. For each ten league titles won the clubs shirts are adorned with a gold star, currently Juventus have two stars and AC Milan & Inter Milan have one each.
