The League of Ireland is the top-tier of club football in the Republic of Ireland. The league was founded in 1921 as a league of eight clubs and it has now expanded into a two-tiered league of 19 clubs. The league is known as the Airtricity League due to sponsorship. It is split into the League of Ireland Premier Division and the League of Ireland First Division. Shamrock Rovers are the current champions (2011). The club also have won the most championships (17). The domestic cups in the league are the FAI Cup and the League of Ireland Cup. The international cups are the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League.
Shamrock Rovers, Shelbourne and Bohemians are the most dominant clubs in the league as they have all won over 10 league titles each. The league is developing and slowly getting higher in the UEFA ranking table. The two Dublin clubs Shamrock Rovers and Bohemians have an intense rivalry, the biggest in the league. It is commonly known as the Red Dublin Derby. In 2011 Shamrock Rovers reached the group stage in the UEFA Europa League, the first time in their history. They played two matches won one and lost one.
