Zlatan Ibrahimovic is a Swedish player with a Bosnian father and a Croatian mother, who emigrated to the Scandinavian country before Zlatan was born. He started his career in the Malmo youth academy, in the same city where he was born, eventually signing professionally with the club and appearing 40 times with a return of 16 goals. His talent was noted by Ajax in 2001 and he spent 3 seasons playing for the Dutch giants. His potential was noted by the European superpowers and it was a matter of time before they started to make their moves for the talented 1.92m striker.
When he left Holland, Ibrahimovic went to Italy after Juventus won the race for his signature. He signed for 16 million Euros and spent 2 seasons at the club, playing in 70 matches and scoring 23 goals. It was not a very friendly departure from the Bianconeri as there were threats of legal action against the club by his agent, after the Calciopoli scandal that rocked Italian football and stripped Juventus off their last two Serie A titles due to match fixing. Juve were relegated to Serie B, and a player of Zlatan's class would certainly shun the idea of playing in such an inferior league wasting one year of his career, as he rightfully did. He moved to bitter rivals Inter Milan, where his career re-lighted and between 2006 and 2009 he appeared 88 times and scored 57 goals. The transfer fee paid back in 2006 was 24.8 million Euros. In the three seasons he played at Inter, the club never missed to win the Serie A title with his help. To acquire his signature, his current club Barcelona paid nearly double the price (EUR 45 million) of 3 years ago, plus Samuel Eto'o worth over 20 million Euros. The transfer was finalised on the 27th July 2009 after the player passed the medical. 70000 Blaugrana fans turned up at the Nou Camp to watch his presentation.
He was handed the number 9 shirt which previously belonged to Eto'o and stated that he is overjoyed at having the chance to play alongside Messi, Xavi, Iniesta and Toure. Apart from the new challenge in a new league, Zlatan has the challenge of helping his national team qualify for the upcoming World Cup 2010, where Sweden have a good chance of missing out on qualification after appearing in both the 2002 and 2006 events. Zlatan's debut was on the 31 January 2001 in a friendly against the Faroe Islands and his competitive debut was on the 7 October 2001 in a qualification match against minnows Azerbaijan for the 2002 World Cup. Out of the 21 goals scored for Sweden until before the transfer to Barcelona, six were against the Maltese national team. Zlatan is married to Helena, and is father to 2 children and a pug called Trustor.
