Honduras Football
Honduras are a North American football team who played their first match in 1921. This game also went down as the nation's record defeat as they lost 10-1 to Guatemala. Their early history is very unremarkable with an appearance at the 1930 Central American and Caribbean Games their only notable success.
The nation emerged as a competitive North American nation in 1981 as they hosted the CONCACAF Championship. Honduras won the competition ahead of Mexico, Cuba, Haiti, El Salvador and Canada to win their first major tournament. Just a year later, they managed to qualify for their first ever World Cup. The team performed admirably despite finishing bottom of their group as they gained draws against Northern Ireland and giants Spain.
Following around 20 years of no real achievements, the team were a late entrant into the 2001 Copa America following Argentina's withdrawal. With barely a squad full of players and turning up a day before the start, they surprised the continent with progression from their group in 2nd place. The quarter final saw them take on tournament favourites Brazil. However, Honduras produced one of their greatest ever results to beat Brazil 2-0 and progress to the semi finals. Nevertheless, they lost 2-0 to hosts Columbia but managed to beat Uruguay on penalties in the 3rd/4th play off encounter.
This seemed to help Honduras football massively as the team became one of the better sides in Northern America behind giants USA and Mexico. An appearance at the 2009 Gold Cup semi finals was promising during a time that Honduras were involved in the final 2010 World Cup qualifying group. A last day victory over El Salvador saw the team finish in 3rd on goal difference ahead of Costa Rica guaranteeing them participation in the 2010 World Cup.
