Alexander Hleb is an attacking midfielder who currently plays in the Bundesliga for Stuttgart. He spent the majority of his youth developing with Dinamo Minsk before moving to BATE Borisov as a youth player. In 1999, Hleb broke through into the first team and made 12 appearances as the club won the league championship. The next season he was spotted by Stuttgart who paid £150,000 for his services. Hleb soon established himself as an important player in the side that finished runners up in the Bundesliga during 2002/03. Nevertheless, once Felix Magath left the club for Bayern Munich, Stuttgart had a less successful time finishing in 5th place during the 2004/05 campaign.
In 2005, Hleb moved to Arsenal for around £15 million. The early stages of his Arsenal career were tricky as injury saw him struggle to settle in the capital. Nevertheless, the second half of the campaign saw his performances improve as he became the first Belarusian footballer to play in the Champions League final. The 06/07 season was another promising season for the midfielder who had won Arsenal fans over. Even so, scoring goals was the one area that he failed to produce in during his time at the club. The 07/08 season was his final under Arsene Wenger as further skilful performances caught the eye of various clubs around Europe.
Perhaps surprisingly, the midfielder moved to Barcelona in the 2008 summer transfer window for 15 million Euros. The player later admitted that the move was a mistake as he became nothing more than a fringe player during his one season at the Spanish club. Even so, he was still part of the squad that managed to win a historic treble under Pep Guardiola. In the summer of 2009, it was announced that Hleb was to return to Stuttgart on a season long loan. He is currently a regular for the German club although it is currently unknown whether or not the move will be made permenant in 2010.
