Halifax Town currently play in the Blue Square Premier league (formerly the Conference National) and have the accolade of playing at the largest stadium in the league. The Shaymen's home ground is called The Shay, and seats around 14,000 people.
The club has not had an easy history. Formed in 1911, Halifax was one of the founding members of the Football League Third Division North, where they remained until the Football League was restructured in 1958.
The club encountered somewhat mediocre performances, being relegated to the Fourth Division, before Alan Ball Senior took over as manager in 1967. After securing promotion to the Third Division in 1969, the club managed to achieve a number of strong finishes in the league. These years have been regarded as the club's glory years, which ended when the club was once again relegated in 1976.
Since then, the club has suffered various financial problems and were relegated again, this time o the Conference, in 1992. However The Shaymen tasted glory once more when they achieved promotion back into the Football League in the 1997/98 season.
Unfortunately for Halifax fans, their club was demoted back to the Conference in 2001/2, giving the club the unwanted achievement of being the first club to be relegated to the Conference twice. Despite reaching the playoff final in 2006, the club has remained in the Conference ever since.
Halifax Town's home strip consists of a purple and white striped shirt, with purple shorts and socks. Their current away kit is yellow, with blue trim.
