Gilberto Silva Brazil kit

Gilberto Silva is a defensive midfielder who currently plays for Greek club Panathinaikos FC. Following a poor childhood, Silva was given the opportunity to play for America Mineiro as a youth player throughout the early 1990 's. In 1997, Silva signed a professional contract with the Brazilian side as a central defender. After three seasons of progression with the side, he moved to rivals Atletico Mineiro. Following several injuries, Silva was converted into a defensive midfielder that saw him become a sensation in Brazilian club football.

Following a hugely impressive 2002 World Cup, Silva moved to Arsenal for £4.5 million. His first season at the club saw him win the FA Cup as the club beat Southampton 1-0. Nevertheless, it was the 2003/04 campaign that will go down as his best ever as Arsenal went unbeaten en route to the Premier League title. However, the 04/05 season was a nightmare for the midfielder who suffered a career threatening back injury that ruled him out for seven months. After the departures of some key squad players including Patrick Vieira, Silva became one of the senior members of the Arsenal squad and was named as stand in captain on several occasions in the following seasons. The 2007/08 season was to be Silva 's last in the capital after the Brazilian lost his place to Mathieu Flamini in midfield. However, when Flamini left for AC Milan it looked as if Silva would stay and win back his place. Towards the end of the 2008 transfer window, the player moved to Greek club Panathinaikos where he still remains today.

The 33-year-old midfielder has currently made 83 appearances for Brazil and participated in two World Cups. He made his debut for the national team in October 2001 and kept his place for the upcoming 2002 World Cup. Although he was only expected to be cover, Silva started every match of the tournament following injuries to key players in midfield. He was cited as a major factor in Brazil 's eventual triumph at the tournament. The serious back injury halted Silva 's career throughout 2004 and 2005. However, he was still included in the squad at the 2006 World Cup where he made two starts and two substitute appearances. Nevertheless, Brazil was defeated in the quarter finals. In 2007, Silva was made captain of the side throughout the 2007 COPA America tournament. The team beat Argentina 3-0 in the final which happened to be the only match Silva missed due to suspension. He still remains a squad regular today and will hope to reach the 100 cap milestone.
