Alberto Gilardino began his youth career at Piacenza before making his first team debut at the club in 1999. During his first season, he scored three goals in 17 appearances. However, he was sold to Verona in 2000 where his performances failed to improve. In two seasons with the club he only managed five goals in 39 matches. A further transfer in 2002 to Parma followed. His first season with the Serie A club saw him again only score five goals. Even so, he announced himself onto the world stage in 2003/04 with 23 goals, more than he'd scored in his entire professional career at that point. He repeated the feat the following season with a further 23 goals.
In July 2005, Gilardino made a 24 million euro transfer to AC Milan. He scored 17 goals in his first Serie A campaign although struggled in the Champions League. Once again, he hit double figures the following season during Milan's poor Serie A season. On the whole, he scored 36 goals during his three year spell with the club. Unexpectedly, Gilardino signed for Florentina in May 2008 for 15 million euro. He finished his first season in the league with 19 goals and was immediately adored by the Florentina supporters.
Gilardino had a fantastic career with the Italian u21s between 2000-04 and is the current all time top goalscorer for the age group. He won a bronze medal with the Olympic team and helped lead the team to victory in the 2004 European U21 Football Championship. As a member of the senior team, his finest moment was being a part of the 2006 Italian squad that won the World Cup. During the tournament, he played in the first two matches before making a substitute appearance in the semi finals. He has currently scored 16 goals in 38 appearances for his country.
