Darren Gibson began his football career as a junior in the Derry and District League with Institute FC. He joined Manchester United in 2004 before making his senior debut in October 2005 against Barnet in the League Cup. For the rest of the season he was a regular in the United reserves team as they went on to win the treble. In 2006, he was presented with the Jimmy Murphy award for Young Manchester United Player of the Year.

He then spent two seasons out on loan in a bid to gain some first team football to push for a first team place at Manchester United. In 2006/07, Gibson was one of a number of United players to join Royal Antwerp on loan before moving to Wolves for a year in 2007/08. Gibson’s Premier League debut for Manchester United arrived in November 2008 as a substitute against Stoke. 7 days later he made his Champions League debut as a substitute against Villarreal. He made further appearances in the FA Cup that season getting two goals in the process before starting the League Cup final against Tottenham that United eventually won on penalties. He scored his first goal in the Premier League on the final day of the 2008/09 season with a 25 yard strike against Hull City. Gibson was rewarded for his efforts with a new three year contract until 2012.

The midfielder’s international career has been highly debated throughout his short career. Despite being born in Northern Ireland, Gibson turned his back on the nation after U16 level to play for the Republic of Ireland. He made his full ROI debut in 2007 against Denmark and has been a regular in the European and World Cup qualification squads, most recently under Giovanni Trapattoni.
