Gabriel Heinze Argentina kit
Gabriel Heinze is a defender who currently plays at Olympique de Marseille in the French League. The Argentine began his career in his homeland with Newells Old Boys FC in 1996. After just one season with the club, he moved to Real Valladolid where he failed to appear at all during his first season. As a result, Heinze was loaned to Sporting CP for the 1998/99 season. He only made five appearances during this rather unsuccessful spell. Upon his return, Heinze made 54 appearances during his final two years at Valladolid. At the beginning of the 2001/02 campaign, the defender moved to Paris Saint-Germain where he had significantly more success. In three seasons, he made 113 appearances and helped the club to the 2004 French Cup.
His performances attracted some of the larger clubs around Europe. In the summer of 2004, Sir Alex Ferguson purchased Heinze for £6.9 million. He made a good first impression and immediately became the club's first choice left back for the rest of the season. However, an injury in September 2005 ruled him out for the rest of that season. It seems that this injury was largely responsible for Heinze's underwhelming United career as the club bought Patrice Evra to add competition for the beginning of the 2006/07 campaign. Evra established himself as the first choice left back. As a result, Heinze was played at centre back alongside Wes Brown. Nevertheless, this didn't have the overly positive effect that United were looking for.
In August 2007, the Argentine moved to Real Madrid for around £8 million. In his first season with the Spanish giants, Heinze won the La Liga title and the Spanish Super Cup. However, he never really established himself at Madrid and the following trophyless season was to be his last. All in all, he made 44 appearances in two years at the club. In July 2009, he moved to Marseille on a two year deal for an undisclosed fee. He is currently one of the first choice Marseille defenders.
At international level, Heinze has been a regular ever since his debut in 2003 in an away friendly against Libya. His greatest achievement was winning a gold medal at the 2004 Olympics. He was called up the 2006 World Cup but could only watch from the sidelines as Argentina exited at the quarter final stage. Under Diego Maradona, Heinze has been one of the only players to consistently feature. It is expected that he will be in the squad to go to the 2010 World Cup.
