Craig Gardner started his youth career at Aston Villa where he remained up until his professional debut. This debut came on the 26 December 2005 where he came on as a substitute for Steven Davies against Everton at Villa Park. Gardner’s first team appearances gradually increased over the course of the season and he notched his first goal for the club in April 2006. He also made an impact on the final day of the season with a great strike that became a goal of the season contender. After a number of impressive performances, Gardner signed a new deal in 2007 and started the 07/08 well with two free kick goals in two games in October. He added another goal in December against Arsenal in the 2-1 defeat at Villa Park.
Often touted as one for the future, Gardner was restricted to just three league appearances in the 2008/09 season. However, he was heavily involved in all of the cup competitions giving him a total of 30 appearances overall during the season. In September 2008, Gardner signed a new deal keeping him with the club until 2012. Due to Villa’s lack of depth, Gardner has often been played as a right back and has impressed many onlookers including his manager Martin O’Neil with his versatility.
Gardner’s international career has been fairly unspectacular to date. He is yet to win a cap for the full international team but has received 14 caps for the U21’s scoring two goals in the process. Possibly Gardner’s finest moment to date was captaining the U21 team in the final group match against Germany in the 2009 U21 European Championships where England drew 1-1.
