William Gallas is a centre back who started his professional career at SM Caen in 1995. At the time, Caen was in the Second division and he helped them gain promotion to Ligue 1 in 1996 as champions. After 34 appearances, Gallas transferred to Marseille in 1997 where he stayed for four years. During his time at the club, he made 84 appearances and scored two goals in the process.
In 2001, Claudio Ranieri bought the defender for £6.2 million. He initially became a fans favourite after striking up impressive partnerships with Marcel Desailly and John Terry. Gallas was part of the team that won back to back Premier League titles under Jose Mourinho. He also won the League Cup with the club but failed to capture the elusive Champions League medal after several defeats in the semi finals. Nevertheless, Gallas left Chelsea on poor terms during the 2006 summer transfer window. During the previous season, he complained about being forced to play at full back before refusing to sign a new contract as the season neared an end. After failing to show for the club's pre season tour in the USA citing tiredness from the World Cup. Inevitably, he moved to Arsenal in a swap deal involving Ashley Cole.
Gallas' move to the Emirates Stadium has been eventful to say the least. Statistically, he has performed well with a very impressive 12 goals in 86 matches. However, after being made the club captain, his anger got the better of him on several occasions where he showed the club in a bad light. Eventually, he was replaced in 2008 as captain by Cesc Fabregas before injury saw his season ended prematurely. Various rumours linked Gallas with other clubs but he has started the 2009/10 campaign in fine form with new defensive partner Thomas Vermaelen.
