Mathieu Flamini is a defensive midfielder/utility player who currently turns out for AC Milan. The French international 's career began at his local club Marseille where he was a youth player between 2001/03. His debut for the first team arrived in December 03 in the 1-0 victory over Toulouse. He went on to make 14 more appearances in the league for Marseille that season. Nevertheless, it was Flamini 's performances during the club 's UEFA Cup campaign that year that attracted interest from several top European clubs.
In July 2004, Flamini signed a deal at Arsenal after backing out over the verbal agreement already in place with Marseille. Initially, the player filled in for a number of injured players but was unable to command a first team place in his favoured position. The following season saw much of the same with Flamini deployed in both full back positions. Even so, he performed consistently and became a valuable versatile member of the Arsenal squad. Despite impressing early on during the 2006/07 campaign, Flamini remained as a utility player and was on the verge of agreeing a move to Birmingham. However, the 07/08 season saw him finally break into the team alongside Cesc Fabregas in the Arsenal midfield. The impressive partnership contributed to an impressive season for the North London club.
Out of the blue, Flamini refused to sign a new contract at Arsenal and moved to Italian club AC Milan in the summer 2008 transfer window. The move initially seemed to be a mistake as he went back to becoming a utility player for the first half of the season. Nevertheless, he earned his place in the Milan side as a tenacious right back during the second half of the campaign. His versatility remains an asset to Milan throughout the 09/10 season where he will hope to add to his three France caps.
