Rio Ferdinand is a centre back who started his professional career at West Ham United despite having spells at Millwall and QPR as a teenager. The defender made his senior West Ham debut in May 1996 in the Hammers last game of the season against Sheffield Wednesday. He went on to make 127 appearances for West Ham between 1996-2000. In 1997/98, he won the young Hammer of the year award at the age of 19. It was no surprise that Ferdinand's performances attracted the attention of larger clubs. Eventually in 2000, Ferdinand joined up and coming side Leeds United for £18 million.
Ferdinand's Leeds debut was a disappointing 3-0 defeat against Leicester City. Nevertheless, he settled reasonably well and went on to become a key part of the team's defence in the run to the semi finals of the Champions League. In 2001, he was made club captain and put in a series of impressive displays despite the side's failure to make the top four that season. With the club entering severe financial difficulties, it was rumoured during the summer of 2002 that Ferdinand would be forced to move on. This proved true as the club accepted a bid of £29.1 million from Manchester United for the defender prompting his exit from Elland Road.
Ferdinand's United form was patchy in the early stages with an indifferent showing against Real Madrid in the Champions League. Nevertheless, he won the 02/03 Premier League title with the team in his first season with the club. However, in 2003, he missed a routine drugs test which ended with an eight month ban starting from January 2004. Following the restart of his playing career, he hit top form and added three more Premier League titles in a row to his collection from 2006 - 2009. The defender also added two League Cups and most important a UEFA Champions League winners medal to his collection in 2008. His form in 2009/10 so far has been far below his usual standards with injury disrupting his season.
Ferdinand made his international debut in 1997 at the age of 19. He was also included in the 1998 World Cup squad although as a back up defender. Nevertheless, he was selected at the 2002 and 2006 tournaments as first choice defender. In 76 appearances for his country, Ferdinand has scored three goals. He continues to be a first choice selection and realistically could pass 100 caps in the next couple of years if his form remains steady.
