Umbro to make next seasons Manchester City Shirts

Posted on February 23rd, 2009 in Manchester City by 01news

British newspaper the Daily Mail are reporting that Umbro are on the verge of a deal to replace Le Coq Sportif as kit manufacturers of Manchester City. The Daily Mail claim that Umbro have hired 200 new members of staff to cope with the new Man City contract. The Le Coq Sportif shirt deal was worth £10 million over four years, so any deal with Umbro is expected to be worth in excess of that.

Umbro to replace Le Coq Sport

Perhaps shocking kits like the the Orange third shirt of this season (which won worst shirt of 2008) have put off the city board. Further rumours suggest that Peter Kenyon will be Manchester City’s next chief executive, he used to work for Umbro and his position at Chelsea seems in doubt after Luiz Felipe Scolari was sacked whilst Kenyon was on holiday, some say Kenyon also used to be a Manchester City supporter.

If this is true, there is a good chance that the Manchester City shirts will be on the same template as the new England shirt which will be unveiled in March (for the England v Slovakia friendly)

In my opinion Nike make the best kits, although recently they have started to ignore tradition, Umbro are next, followed by Adidas and Errea

Le Coq are quite poor, Puma would be better if they had less logos, Lotto and Kappa’s loggo mean I would not buy these shirts.

Like said in my critique of the that “orange thing” that some idiot(s) decided someone would 40 pounds for. Le Coq whilst they did produce some gems in the 80’s – Spurs, Argentina etc, they clearly bottled it on their Man City account – . The home shirt is an asymetrical mess – oh that annoying white stripe. Hopefully – we’ll get a clean home shirt and an away shirt with a colour that doesn’t look like you’re going whale hunting.

  16. brn442 said,

to be fair – the 07/08 home shirt was halfway decent.

incase you had all forgotten Nike own Umbro………so the kits will be amazing……..also rumour has it the old badge is coming back

Nike have owned Umbro for about a year and a half maybe even 2 years now and it is still the same shite quality and terrible designs!

  19. MB-MUFC said,

i dont care, lets face it, theres only one good team in Manchester! XD

Yeah, that’s because City are the only team in Manchester, therefore there is only one good team in Manchester.

the new city shirts are gonna be along the same design as the new england shirt and im thinking this will be one of the best shirts seen for along time

totally agree since when has salford and trafford been in manchester?

  23. Tim said,

Old Trafford is a “massive” 1 mile further away from the centre of town than Eastlands is. It’s only 1/2 a mile further away than Miane Road was.

United played just round the corner from your current stadium at Bank Street over 100 years ago.

Lets not let the facts get in the way of the old bitter obsession with municipal boundries though, eh? That’s all City fans have been going on about for the last 30 odd years. The fact that that they have won nothing for decades and that they struggle to fill more than 20,000 seats for UEFA cup home games, doesn’t matter, as long as they remain inside that imaginary line…

  24. ctid said,

still the only team in manchester tho

  25. Tim said,

Droylsden FC are also from within the city boundaries, so you’re wrong.

  26. Joe said,

They call us bitter blues, and say they don’t care about us (city) and there bitter as fvck

  27. jake said,

we should get kappa back, they made our nicest shirts in years

  28. Dooshra said,

why would Umbro 200 extra people just to market a kit for Man City. We are in a recession for fugs sake

  29. Chris said,

I don’t really who make the kit,so long as it’s plain and simple and made in 3xL.None of these kits with flashes of colour here and there, just good old simple lines will do please.

  30. Dale said,

The reason City haven’t gone with Nike is clearly cos United are sponsored by them.
It’d be like Everton and Liverpool both being made by adidas, or Chelsea/Arsenal/Spurs sharing a kit sponsor.
Not all the Coq kits are that bad – the Wolves one’s quite nice.
Also, if you’ve actually played a game in a kit, you’d know that the Umbro kits are much thinner and better to wear during a game, whereas the adidas and Nike kits are much thicker and somewhat heavier. It’s not much of a difference, but you notice it in soaking rain or blazing heat.

  31. Thorpie-MCFC said,

Umbro would be a bad choice, hell were the richest team in the world, lets go with whoever the hell we like, Kappa would be great, hell, lets put EIDOS on the chest, haha.

le coq sportif are great, make kits that are different, and we dont need huge companies like nike, dont wanna be looking like the scum in red now do we :D

  32. ste said,
