08/10 Diadora Scottish Kits

Scotland to seek new manufacturer

Posted on July 12th, 2009 in Scotland by reddevilrooney

Scotland’s football kits are presently manufactured and supplied by Italian brand Diadora. However, this firm has gone into receivership, as its assets are being taken over by the owner of shoe-maker company GEOX. The deal with the Scottish national team runs until 2010, but it will now be terminated as soon as the World Cup qualifying stage comes to an end. Despite Scotland’s destiny being yet undecided, they are looking to fight with Macedonia for the 2nd place in Group 9, behind the Netherlands which have collected an astonishing 7 wins from 7 games. Being successful in occupying the runner-up place in the group would put Scotland in the play-offs for a chance to qualify for South Africa 2010.

A spokesman for the Scottish Football Association said that the association was already in talks with other manufacturers, but the Scottish team would continue playing in the Diadora kits until the World Cup qualifying campaign is over. He praised the loyalty of the Scottish faithful and said that the fans are the reason for a stronger position in negotiations with new shirt manufacturers. Other nations whose shirts are manufactured by Diadora are Liberia, mid-Mediterranean island Malta, Myanmar, and Syria.

Rob Shorthouse – spokesman for Scottish Football Association

“Obviously, we’ve been made aware that Diadora UK has gone into receivership.”

“We have an agreement with Diadora that takes us through to the end of the World Cup campaign, so Scotland will still play the next few games in the current home kit.”

“We’re in a good position because Scotland fans are extremely loyal to their national team and buy the shirts in huge numbers.”

“We’re an attractive proposition to other companies and are very confident this will be sorted out.”

“It’s a shame for the guys at Diadora, who have been great partners with us over the past six years.”

Fila then Diadora after Umbro, who next? Bukta, Errea, Vandanel? They should beg Umbro to take them back. They used to have half decent shirts when Umbro made them.

Shame. Diadora have made some really classy kits for Scotland (check them out on the Historical Football Kits site). The current one is back to tradition and very smart. Puma and Adidas would drown the Scottish kits in whatever garish template they would throw at them. I suspect Umbro or Nike would do really well for Scotland.
