Philadelphia Union team name chosen for 2010 MLS Season

Posted on May 9th, 2009 in Major League Soccer by reddevilrooney

The top football division in the United States, the Major League Soccer, will see the introduction of a new football team as from 2010. The league forms part of the CONCACAF confederation and dates back to 1993. Currently, it comprises of 15 teams, one of which, Toronto FC, comes from Canada. Due to huge geographical distances, the top league is divided into two decision: Western conference and Eastern conference. The latter has 8 teams participating, while the former has 7.

A new club to form part of the Major League Soccer as from the 2010 season will be Philadelphia Union. They will be playing in the Eastern Conference to take the number of teams up to 9. The name was decided on the 8th May and was communicated to fans via the Philadelphia Inquirer, along with the club crest and team colours. As the end of the 2009 season (22 November 2009) gets closer, we expect to have the official unveiling of the new club’s home and away strips. All we know for now is that the colours of the team will be blue and gold, so probably the home shirt will be coloured accordingly.

    wow.
if only it was that easy to get straight into the top league of english football. Does anyone know then if their is any lower American leagues because this sounds as if they are a brand new team.

  3. JWheelie12 said,

Liam, american sports are completely different to english sports. It is a franchise system so teams are bought, moved and created at will.

This is a brand new franchise and there are lower leagues in the USA but they aren’t linked to the MLS at all. Meaning there is no promotion or relegation.

Nice crest… If Internazionale is not going to use it, someone else should.

  5. Tank said,

Just another team for the Dynamo to beat up on….but really how many more teams does the US need?

  6. Smithy said,

This is why the MLS is so poor compared to the european leagues.

  7. cory said,

the Dynamo aren’t beating up on anyone at the moment, first of all. I like the colors on the crest, but the snake? Since when did Philly have an abundance of snakes? And American soccer is no EPL or Primera, but it’s made strides since starting in ‘96, and once we have a full top flight then we’ll consider relegation/promotion. It’s not viable for the league to do it at the moment.

the snake references ‘don’t tread on me’

  13. Will said,

the snake dates to revolutionary war, american independence times and ben franklin and the “don’t tread on me” flag of that time. as Philadelphia was the US capital at the time, they are tying in the location and it’s historical roots/significance

  14. Rupert Grint said,

yeah i really like the snake, i wish the US national team would change their crest to include something like that… or at least make theirs look non-******

  15. miguel said,

Good name. Good colors. I hope they have blue and gold striped shirts with blue shorts and white socks… that would look great.

  16. Tank said,

Cory you *** your most likely an LA fan so you just cant get past the fact that no matter how hard the MLS attempted to make that **** team the flagship franchise they still suck balls….but good for Philly new colors for the league can’t wait to see them next year.

  17. Naenia said,

i think that’s a really smart logo. Decent, different name too.

  18. jp said,

the team names in MLS Soccer leagues are rubbish. It sounds more like American Football when you hear the names. Listen, Colorado Rapids. Columbus Crew, Philadelphia Union. Terrible names

  19. fuzzy_3000 said,

Actually, the whole badge is well thought out. It’s the colours of the Philly city seal and flag, the 13 stars as the state was one of the original 13 from the Union, which is where the name comes from, and the snake from the don’t tread on me, also used on the naval flags. Well done America (for once) :)

  20. tomskadomsky said,

    4 things:

    1. why no relegation and promotion?
    2. america is ****
    3. well done…15 whole teams in a league! great!
    4. they are a new team…whats with all of the stars?
    5. yummy…philadelphia!

  22. MisterBroom12 said,

JP, England have better names? Manchester United Football Club Red Devils? Arsenal Football Club Gunners? Why not just write a novel and then make it a team name. And for those wondering, the snake if from a series of political cartoons written by Ben Franklin symbolizing the need for unity for the colonies to survive. Plus, all of you from England that are making fun of US soccer, remember that your country and all its amazingness couldn’t stop the United States from becoming a better one during the revolutionary war. The greatest upset of all time. Also, how about England during Euro 2008, good times.

  23. Liam said,

tomskadomsky, you said 4 things and then wrote five?

  24. MisterBroom12 said,

tomskadomsky, they refer to each of the 13 colonies in the union, the ones that beat England in the war… Which makes your 2nd point incorrect.

The EPL is amazing…I will admit. I love it. But don’t forget we kicked your imperialist soldiers off our land…then we did it again 35 yrs later….then we turned the tide of the 1st Great War….and we saved your island from absolute and complete annhilation in WWII. And we forgive you for supplying the South with weapons and supplies during our own Civil War. Show some respect…Don’t Tread on Me!

  26. swji said,

I think it’s good that they continue to expand the MLS, makes it more competitive. They have lower leagues in the US too, so it will hopefully only be a matter of time before there is relegation and promotion? Or do you think they’ll stick to the good old US format of no relegations?

  27. Sean said,

    Dear “jp”

You eurotrash nerds just put “FC” at the end of your silly town’s name and that’s it – team name done. Our names may be a bit weird, but hey – at least we tried.

    UNION or DIE MOFO’S

  28. Sean said,

OH and a little p.s. to all you fukktards who think US soccer is doomed to stay forever relegated to the dregs of American sports (especially you over-the-hill aging jock American sports fans), just remember this –

Which generation grew up ALL playing soccer? MINE

Which generation is now in their mid-20’s, graduated from college and is now the generation starting to have real spending power and disposable income? MINE

For me, it’s baseball and soccer. Hockey too, but baseball and soccer. My dad watches regular football – he can keep it.

  29. Mike said,

Another point most of you Euro snobs don’t seem to realize…Most of the U.S.’s best athletes play other sports i.e. Baseball, (American) Football, Basketball, Hockey. Most Americans don’t even know (or care) who Chelsea or Arsenal are. If our best athletes started playing Soccer, we’d whip your pasty asses on a regular basis.

Yes! I live in Philly and have been waiting for a long time for this! I will definitaley be a season ticket holder. And for all u haters out there, our league has been around for 13 years! Give it time to grow and develop! The epl has been around forever. Us soccer is benefitting from this league! The mls has produced solid players for the us and mostly all the players on the confederations cup roster started in the mls and we beat the best team in the world!
